Microdermabrasion Acne

More recently, a skin renewal treatment called microdermabrasion was introduced. It is particularly popular among younger individuals with mild skin damage seeking to preserve and maintain a youthful complexion.

Essentially, microdermabrasion involves brushing the face with sterile micro-particles to abrade or rub off the very top skin layer, then vacuuming away the particles and derm-abraded skin. Experts believe the procedure works best to polish and soften fine lines and improve dull skin texture. In most cases, a minimum of 4 to 5 initial treatments, seven to 10 days apart, is necessary to achieve optimal results.

Microdermabrasion is a superficial peeling modality that has become quite popular with our patients and the media.

Twenty-five patients with grade II–III acne were enrolled into this pilot study. All patients were under dermatologic care and were maintained on their acne medications throughout the study. Patients received eight microdermabrasion treatments at weekly intervals. The results were documented with before and after photographs and evaluated for clinical improvement.

Twenty-four patients completed the study with 38% having excellent results, 34% with good results, 17% with fair results, and 12% with poor results. Ninety-six percent of patients were pleased with their peel results and would recommend this procedure to others.

The use of microdermabrasion in this pilot study appeared to produce a positive effect on the improvement of acne.
